EYE

The magic of closing your eyes wide shut

The eye is our organ of visual perception, but its metaphorical meanings take us far beyond, into realm of the unseen. What do we see when we shut our eyes? In a conscious waking state, we will “see” the images of things already seen, offered up by our prodigious memory. But what is it we see when we shut our eyes and sleep? We see the images of dreams, served up to us by our subconscious mind. These images are not stored like photos in our mind, they are produced like a movie, by some internal film director, seen through his eyes. We have no choice but to watch this nightly cinema, but we do have a choice about what we learn from the experience. You are your own film director and producer. You are the dream-weaver.

You do this incredible work every night, then wake up and pretend that those dreams just happened to you, and move on to you conscious daily business, about which you will likely dream the following night!

Now, what if you, your dreaming self, had some very important advice to give to you, your waking self? What if, instead of paying a large sum of money to a coach, counselor, or shrink, you paid yourself for your own advice? We did not say “save the spending”.We said “pay yourself”. Well, that would first require serious confidence in the value of your own self-knowledge, and belief that your dreaming self held the keys to this knowledge.

Other seemingly magical things happen when your eyes are shut, in sleep. Your brain finds solutions that you would not have found through conscious thinking. Great inventors know this, and many reported their habit of clearly framing an unresolved problem in their minds before they go to sleep, then taking note of what they “download” during the night.

We are biologically programmed to give our conscious minds a rest. Our brains consume the majority of our energy, absorbed most in thoughts that do not serve us well.

Take this step of trust in your inner knowing. Before you go to sleep, ask your "other self" (your non-analytical mind) to bring you insight into the specific inquiry you have. Take note of any dreams you have or intuitions that arise upon waking.

Become your own oracle.
