GOD

Love, the final frontier.

Our space of belief is encumbered with ideas about God. We are born into a religion that is not of our choosing, and embark on life carrying heavy bags of belief. Imagine simply getting rid of the “God-burden”, that is, the burden of inherited belief. Does this terrify you, sadden you, or anger you? Maybe you have associated all that is good with all that is your God? If God is not in fact someone separate from you, then you may fear that you have nobody on whom to depend. Who will come to set this world right, in the end?

On the other extreme, have you entirely demystified the universe, reducing it to a material phenomenon, an elaborate algorithm? Maybe you feel more secure relying on your sensory perceptions (including the mind) which give you a sense of control? When life has evolved to its end-state, what then?

To hold to religion requires enormous effort. You have to rationalize everything within your fundamental box of beliefs. If you deviate, you will be ostracized by your community of believers. To remain solely scientific is also an immense challenge. You have to ignore your heart and rely on observable proof. If you deviate, you will be ostracized by your fellow scientists.

In either case, you’re stuck in a belief (or non-belief) system.

What you can do is start anew, as a child with innocent eyes and an open heart. Other possibilities can emerge. As long as we live, we cannot escape the light. Vibrant, joyous life will continue to thrust itself through our bleakest states. Love will flower in the desert. When we outgrow the need for the “Father God”, separate from ourselves, we can then open our eyes to beauty and connect with its source. Why diminish the mystery? Loving and life-giving intelligence surrounds us.

Once we clear away the obstruction of an imposed God, in silence we will hear the voice, in stillness we will sense the presence, in love we will know the divine.
